The rainy season in Mauritius usually runs from December to April. Here are recommendations/good practices as to how to react to a flood or water accumulation at home.

 

BEFORE THE FLOOD HITS:

  • Clean drains, downspouts, catch basins, and gutters to avoid any risk of water accumulation.
  • Store all sensitive equipment and belongings, including outdoor furniture, under cover.
  • If your home is in a flood zone, keep your furniture above ground level.

 

DURING THE FLOOD:

  • Move valuable belongings to an upper floor, if possible.
  • Turn off electrical power if it is safe to do so.
  • Do not touch electrical appliances if you are soaked.

 

AFTER THE FLOOD:

In case of loss or damages:

  • Take photos showing the extent of loss or damage and remove water and mud from your premises.

BEFORE THE FLOOD HITS:

  • Move your car to a higher level as water collects in lower areas first.
  • Secure your vehicle and lock it up properly to prevent loss or possible damage.
  • Avoid parking in areas prone to floods.

 

DURING THE FLOOD:

  • Avoid driving during heavy rains due to limited visibility and difficulty estimating water depth. This could cause damage to your vehicle.
  • If you are suddenly caught in a flooded area, turn back if possible.

 

AFTER THE FLOOD:

If your vehicle has suffered damage:

  • Submit all pictures taken showing the extent of damage to your vehicle.
